John Sisk & Son is providing Civil, Structural, Architectural (CSA) and ancillary works at a new Solid Recovered Fuel Thermal Power Station under construction at Runcorn, Cheshire. The £233m Energy from Waste CHP plant is part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) waste management project by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.
On completion in 2012, the Thermal Power Station will be one of the largest Energy from Waste facilities in the UK and will have a capability to treat up to 810,000 tonnes per year of solid recovered fuel derived from household waste which will be delivered by both road and rail. It will be able to supply at full capacity some 174,000 MWth and export 100MW of electricity and 500,000 tonnes of steam per year into the internal network of the neighbouring Ineos Runcorn site.
The scope of the works awarded to John Sisk & Son includes enabling, piling and site infrastructure works, together with all structural, architectural, sprinkler and mechanical / electrical works for all the buildings and structures on the scheme. The building and structures include a tipping hall, waste bunker, boiler house, flue gas cleaning, turbine hall, substations and transformer areas. The works also includes significant rail siding development works incorporating track realignment, gantry crane foundations and associated unloading infrastructure.
